The Mirror and the Dust

By Dr. Zeal Okogeri

There once was a seeker who lived quietly, carrying a subtle feeling that something within her was not clear.

One day, a traveler came to visit. As he looked around the home, his eyes settled on a large mirror hanging on the wall. It was covered in a thick layer of dust.

“Why do you keep a mirror you cannot see into?” the traveler asked.

The seeker shrugged. “It has always been like that. I assumed it no longer worked.”

The traveler stepped closer, his voice calm. “The mirror has never stopped working. It is only covered.”

Something in those words stirred the seeker. She picked up a cloth and wiped a small corner.

For the first time, she saw her reflection clearly. It caught her off guard. There was a presence there, something alive and familiar, yet distant.

She began to wipe more of the surface. Slowly, patiently. With each movement, more of herself appeared.

“Where did all this dust come from?” she asked, almost in a whisper.

“A little from fear,” the traveler said. “A little from pain. A little from what others said about you. And a little from what you came to believe about yourself. It gathered over time, so quietly that you forgot what it was like to see clearly.”

The seeker stood in silence, looking into the mirror.

“So I was never lost?”

The traveler shook his head gently. “Never. Only covered.”

Spiritual Insight

Soul is like that mirror. It never loses its light. It only becomes covered.

We spend so much of life trying to fix ourselves, to become something better, something worthy. But the deeper truth is simpler than that.

There is nothing wrong with the mirror.

What is needed is a return. A quiet clearing. Cleaning.

Through meditation, the mind becomes still and the dust begins to settle.
Through prayer, the heart softens and opens again.
Through love, and acts of kindness and compassion, something within us begins to shine.

It is not force that clears the mirror. It is care. It is sincerity. It is the quiet willingness to sit with yourself each day, even for a few minutes, and receive the gifts of Spirit. With consistency, you will be amazed at how your life will be transformed.

Reflection

When you feel heavy, unclear, or distant from yourself, pause for a moment.

Ask gently, what is covering my mirror right now?

Do not rush to answer. Just notice.

And then, in your own way, return. Sit in stillness. Offer a quiet prayer. Choose a small act of kindness, even if it is toward yourself.

Remember:

You are not searching for something that is missing.

You are remembering something that has always been there.

With patience, with persistence, with love, the dust begins to fall away.

And what remains is not something new.

It is you. The real you.
