At the edge of a quiet river, where the water moved with calm certainty, a scorpion stood watching the current. The far bank called to him, but he knew he could not cross alone.
Nearby, a frog rested on a smooth stone, half in the water, completely at ease in his element.
The scorpion called out,
“Frog, carry me across the river.”
The frog turned, startled.
“Carry you? Are you serious? You are a scorpion. If I let you on my back, you will sting me.”
The scorpion replied without hesitation, dismissing the frog’s intuitive wisdom.
“Why would I do that? If I sting you, you will die, and I will drown with you. It would be foolish.”
The frog considered this. It made sense. The reasoning was simple, almost undeniable.
“You have a point,” the frog said. “It would not be in your interest to harm me.”
After a brief pause, the frog moved toward the water.
“Very well. Climb on.”
The scorpion stepped onto the frog’s back, and together they entered the river.
The frog swam steadily, trusting the logic he had accepted. The current carried them toward the other side.
But halfway across, without warning, the scorpion raised his tail and stung the frog.
The sting was sharp and unmistakable.
The frog felt the poison move through his body. His strength began to fade, and the steady rhythm of his swimming started to break.
Struggling to stay afloat, the frog cried out,
“Why did you do that? Now we will both die.”
The scorpion looked at him compassionately and said simply,
“Because it is my nature.”
The frog’s strength gave way, and both of them slipped beneath the surface of the water.
Spiritual Insight
True spirituality is the union of love and awareness. Do not betray yourself in the name of kindness. Be kind, but honor your intuition. Do not override inner warning signs. Do not say yes when something feels off. Do not rely on logic when your inner knowing is speaking clearly. Spiritual growth calls you to treat your intuition as sacred guidance.
It is important to understand the nature of things. Not everyone acts from reason or logic. Some people move from deeply ingrained patterns shaped by habits, wounds, conditioning, or ego. Spiritual maturity is the ability to discern nature, not just listen to words. Wisdom is not only about trusting. It is about seeing clearly.
Compassion must be paired with awareness. The frog was kind, but not discerning. Being spiritual does not mean being naive. True compassion includes boundaries, clarity, and inner knowing. Love without wisdom can lead to suffering.
People reveal themselves through patterns. The scorpion did not suddenly become harmful. He was acting according to his nature. In life, we are shown who people are through repeated behaviors, emotional reactions, and unconscious tendencies. Learn to trust patterns more than promises. You can support someone in their healing, but you cannot ignore who they are in the present moment. Until real transformation happens, their nature will continue to express itself.
True spirituality is the union of love and awareness.
