The Highest and Best Spiritual Path

By Zeal Okogeri

There was once a man, a seeker who traveled far and wide searching for the right path in life.

More than anything, he wanted to live a life aligned with truth, peace, purpose, and spiritual fulfillment. Deep within his heart, he believed there had to be one path that was highest, wisest, and most aligned with the Divine above all others.

So he searched everywhere.

He sat with monks, spiritual teachers, healers, scholars, and mystics. Everywhere he went, he asked the same question:

“Which path leads to the best life, both physically and spiritually?”

One teacher told him,
“The path of discipline.”

Another said,
“The path of love.”

Another insisted,
“The path of service.”

Others spoke of surrender, wisdom, prayer, sacrifice, simplicity, meditation, or devotion to God.

Each answer sounded true.
Each teacher spoke with conviction.
Yet the more he listened, the more confused he became.

Over time, his seeking became exhausting.

Deep inside, he feared choosing the wrong direction. He feared wasting his life on a path that was never truly meant for him.

One evening, burdened by uncertainty and longing for clarity, he climbed into the mountains alone to pray.

As night began to fall, he noticed an elderly man sitting quietly beside a lantern. The man’s presence carried a deep stillness, the kind that can only come from years of inner peace and surrender to the Divine. He was a wise teacher.

The younger man sat beside him and finally spoke.

“I have spent years trying to find the best path,” he said. “Every teacher gives a different answer. Some say discipline. Others say love, service, sacrifice, or devotion. I no longer know which way to go.”

The old man listened quietly.

Then he stood, lifted the lantern, and motioned for the younger man to follow him.

They walked together until they reached a wide open field covered in tall grass beneath the moonlight.

The wise teacher stopped and said gently,
“Show me the path.”

The younger man looked around carefully.
“There is no path here,” he replied.

The wise teacher smiled softly and said,
“Exactly.”

Then he stepped into the field and began walking slowly through the grass. As he moved forward, the grass bent beneath his feet, leaving behind a visible trail.

He turned back toward the younger man and said,

“Many souls spend their lives waiting for the right path to appear clearly before them. But often, the path is revealed only through walking.”

The younger man remained silent as the words settled deeply within him.

The wise teacher lifted the lantern once more. Its light reached only a short distance ahead.

“This lantern does not show the entire journey,” he said. “It only gives enough light for the next step. Divine guidance often works the same way. We are rarely shown the whole road at once. We are simply asked to trust enough to take the next faithful step.”

The night became still.

And in that sacred silence, the younger man finally understood.

He had not been searching for the highest and best path in some absolute sense. He had been searching for his right path—the path meant for his life, his unfolding, and his direct walk with the Divine.

And that right path was never a fixed road waiting to be found.

The highest and best path was not about finding a perfect road with certainty. The right path is a life lived with sincerity, courage, humility, and love, and a willingness to receive the guidance and gifts of spirit. It is a path slowly shaped through prayer, meditation, and faithful steps taken one day at a time.

The wise teacher looked toward the horizon and spoke one final truth.

“When the heart is aligned with love and the soul remains open to God, even uncertain steps become part of the right path.”

For the first time in many years, the younger man stopped searching for a perfect path, a path with absolute certainty.

And finally, he found the courage to take a step forward, trusting that his lantern would provide enough light for the next step.
