The Wealthy Man and the Monk

By Dr. Zeal Okogeri

There once lived a wealthy man whose success was known throughout the kingdom. His estates stretched farther than the eye could see. His tables overflowed with the finest foods. His closets were filled with beautiful garments, and his vaults held more gold than he could spend in a lifetime.

To everyone around him, he appeared to have everything.

Yet each morning he awoke with a restless heart.

He worried about protecting what he owned. He feared losing the fortune he had spent years building. The more his wealth increased, the greater his anxiety became. The more he possessed, the less peace he seemed to have.

One day he heard of a monk who lived alone in the mountains. The monk owned almost nothing, yet travelers spoke of a joy that seemed to surround him like sunlight. Some said that kings possessed greater riches, but none possessed greater peace.

Curious, the wealthy man decided to find him.

After a long climb, he came upon the monk sitting beneath a large tree, quietly drinking tea from a simple clay cup.

The monk looked up and smiled.

“You have come a long way,” he said.

“I have,” replied the wealthy man as he sat down beside him. “I have searched for happiness in every place I could imagine. I have built businesses, acquired wealth, and earned the respect of many. Yet the peace I long for continues to escape me.”

The monk listened without interrupting.

Finally the wealthy man asked, “Tell me, what is your secret?”

The monk lifted his cup and took another sip of tea.

“When I drink tea,” he said, “I simply drink tea.”

The wealthy man waited, expecting the monk to continue.

Instead, the monk smiled.

“When I walk, I simply walk. When I rest, I simply rest. When I watch the sunrise, I simply watch the sunrise.”

The wealthy man frowned.

“Surely everyone does those things.”

The monk gently shook his head.

“No. Most people drink tea while worrying about tomorrow. They walk while carrying yesterday. They watch the sunrise without ever truly seeing it. Their bodies are here, but their minds are somewhere else.”

Silence settled between them.

After a while, the wealthy man asked another question.

“Do you never wish for a larger home, finer clothing, or greater comfort?”

The monk looked across the valley where the morning light bathed the mountains in gold.

“I have enough,” he replied softly.

Those three words lingered in the wealthy man’s heart.

As the sun began its slow descent, the wealthy man rose to leave. He bowed respectfully before the monk.

“Master,” he said quietly, “I wish I possessed what you have.”

The monk smiled warmly.

“You already do.”

The wealthy man looked puzzled.

“I do?”

The monk nodded.

“You wake beneath the same sky that I do. You breathe the same air. The same sun warms your face, and the same rain nourishes the earth beneath your feet. Peace has never been withheld from you.”

He paused before continuing.

“The only difference is this. You have spent your life searching for abundance outside yourself, while I discovered it within.”

The wealthy man stood in thoughtful silence.

As he made his way down the mountain, his steps felt lighter than when he had climbed it. For the first time in many years, he noticed the birds singing in the trees. He noticed the wildflowers growing among the rocks and paused to watch the fading sunlight paint the hills with shades of gold.

Nothing around him had changed.

Only the one who was seeing it.

Spiritual Insight

This story is not about rejecting wealth. Money can provide comfort, create opportunity, and become a powerful force for good when guided by wisdom and compassion. Wealth itself is not the problem. It simply reveals more of who we already are.

The monk’s peace did not come from possessing fewer things. It came from being grateful for what he already had. He had learned that contentment is not the absence of ambition but the presence of gratitude. We are free to pursue meaningful goals, build successful lives, and make a positive difference in the world. But if our happiness always depends on the next achievement, peace will remain just beyond our reach.

True abundance begins within. It is found in a grateful heart, a quiet mind, and the ability to be fully present in life’s ordinary moments.

The greatest riches are not those we accumulate, but the peace we awaken within ourselves.
