By Dr. Zeal Okogeri
In a small African village, a young boy loved spending time with his grandfather, one of the village elders. Although his grandfather spoke very little, every word he shared carried the weight of wisdom.
One morning, the old man handed the boy a woven basket.
“Go to the river,” he said with a gentle smile, “and bring me a basket full of water.”
The boy looked at the basket and laughed.
“Grandfather, that’s impossible! The water will run right through it.”
“Go anyway,” the old man replied.
Wanting to please his grandfather, the boy ran to the river. He dipped the basket into the cool water and hurried home as fast as his legs could carry him.
Before he had taken more than a few steps, every drop of water had escaped through the woven reeds.
The basket was empty.
Breathing heavily, he returned to his grandfather.
“I told you it couldn’t be done.”
The old man simply smiled.
“Try again.”
The boy ran back to the river. This time he moved even faster. But once again, by the time he reached home, the basket was empty.
Frustrated, he tried again.
And again.
Each journey ended the same way.
Finally, exhausted and discouraged, the boy placed the basket at his grandfather’s feet.
“I have failed,” he said. “No matter how hard I try, I cannot carry water in a basket.”
His grandfather picked up the basket and held it in the morning sunlight.
“My grandson,” he said softly, “look at the basket.”
The boy looked carefully.
Something had changed.
The basket that had once been covered with dirt, dust, and dried mud was now clean. The flowing water had washed away every stain. The woven reeds looked fresh and new.
“You never brought me the water,” his grandfather said, “but every journey to the river transformed the basket.”
The boy stood quietly, beginning to understand.
The old man placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
“The purpose of the journey was never to carry the water. It was to let the water change the basket.”
The boy smiled.
That morning, he realized that some of life’s greatest lessons are not measured by what we accomplish, but by who we become along the way.
Spiritual Insight
There are times when we wonder if our spiritual practices are making any difference.
We meditate, pray, read inspiring books, or sit quietly in reflection, yet we may feel that nothing is changing. Our minds still wander. Our worries still arise. Our old habits still seem to follow us.
Like the young boy, we may conclude that our efforts have failed.
But transformation often happens so gradually that we do not notice it from one day to the next.
Meditation may not immediately remove every fear or silence every restless thought. Kindness may not instantly change the world around us. Forgiveness may not erase yesterday’s pain overnight.
Yet each time we return to the practice, something within us is quietly being cleansed.
Our hearts become a little softer.
Our minds become a little calmer.
Our patience grows a little deeper.
Our compassion becomes a little stronger.
The changes may be invisible in the moment, but over time they become unmistakable.
Like the woven basket, we are transformed by what continually flows through us.
Do not become discouraged if you cannot yet see the results of your practice. Trust the journey.
The greatest miracle is not always in what we accomplish.
Sometimes, the greatest miracle is who we are becoming.
Every moment spent in sincere spiritual practice leaves a quiet imprint upon the soul.
