The Light in Every Heart

Dr. Zeal Okogeri

Long ago, in a small African village surrounded by tall grasses and ancient trees, there lived a wise elder named Amara.

People from distant villages traveled great distances to seek her guidance.

One day, a young man came to her carrying a heavy sadness.

“Grandmother,” he said, “I feel as though there is darkness inside me. I have made mistakes. I have disappointed others. I wonder if there is anything good left in my heart.”

The elder looked at him kindly.

“Tell me,” she said, “if a lamp is covered by a cloth, does the flame disappear?”

The young man thought for a moment.

“No,” he replied. “The flame is still there. It is only hidden.”

The elder smiled.

“And if clouds cover the sun, does the sun stop shining?”

“No,” he said. “The sun continues to shine above the clouds.”

“Then why do you believe your mistakes have taken away your light?”

The young man lowered his eyes.

“Because I have done things I regret.”

The elder picked up a small piece of charcoal from the fire.

“Look at this,” she said.

“Before it was placed in the fire, it was only wood. But through transformation, it became something that can create warmth and light.”

“Our experiences can do the same.”

“Pain can teach compassion.”

“Failure can teach humility.”

“Loss can teach gratitude.”

“Even our mistakes can become teachers if we are willing to learn from them.”

The young man sat quietly beneath the shade of the tree.

Then the elder placed the charcoal in his hand.

“Never forget this,” she said.

“The purpose of life is not to become someone who has never known darkness.”

“The purpose is to discover the light that has always been within you.”

Years later, that young man became known throughout the region for his kindness and wisdom.

Whenever someone came to him feeling broken, he shared the lesson he had learned:

“The light within you may become hidden, but it is never gone.”

Spiritual Insight

Inspired by African wisdom traditions, this timeless story reminds us that every person carries a light within, even when life’s hardships make it difficult to see.

Every human being carries an inner light.

Sometimes life covers it with fear.

Sometimes disappointment covers it with doubt.

Sometimes pain covers it with sorrow.

But what is hidden is not destroyed.

The spiritual journey is not about creating a light we do not have.

It is about gently removing the layers that hide the light already shining within us.

When we heal ourselves, we become more capable of bringing healing to others.

When we discover compassion for our own imperfections, we become more compassionate toward the imperfections of others.

The light in one heart can awaken the light in another.

And perhaps the greatest gift we can offer the world is not perfection, but the courage to let our inner light shine through our kindness, our compassion, and the ways we choose to demonstrate love.
