A Story About Humility and the Openness to Learn
By Dr. Zeal Okogeri
A scholar once traveled a great distance to meet a famous Zen master. The scholar had spent many years studying philosophy, religion, and spiritual teachings. He had read countless books and considered himself highly knowledgeable.
When he arrived, he bowed respectfully and said:
“Master, I have come seeking wisdom. Please teach me the secrets of enlightenment.”
The Zen master welcomed him and invited him to sit for tea.
As the master poured tea into the scholar’s cup, the cup became full. But the master continued pouring.
The tea overflowed onto the table, spilling onto the floor.
The scholar watched for a moment, then said:
“Master, the cup is already full. You cannot put more tea into it.”
The Zen master gently smiled and replied:
“Like this cup, your mind is full. You are filled with your own ideas, opinions, and conclusions. How can I offer you wisdom unless you first create space to receive it?”
The scholar became silent.
For the first time, he realized that his greatest obstacle was not his lack of knowledge, but his attachment to what he already believed he knew.
He bowed deeply and said:
“Master, teach me how to empty my cup.”
Spiritual Insight
Many people seek wisdom, but they approach life with a cup that is already full.
We fill our minds with beliefs, judgments, expectations, and assumptions. We listen not to understand, but to confirm what we already think is true.
A closed heart cannot receive love.
A restless mind cannot receive peace.
A cup that is full cannot receive anything new.
Humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves. It means remaining open to the possibility that there is always more to learn, more to understand, and more room to grow.
Every encounter in life has something to teach us. Every person we meet carries a lesson. Every moment offers an opportunity for awakening.
The question is not:
“How much do I know?”
The deeper question is:
“Am I open enough to receive what life is trying to teach me?”
When we empty ourselves of pride and expectation, we create space for wisdom, compassion, and divine guidance to enter.
