Kindness

The Two Neighbors

By Dr. Zeal Okogeri

Long ago, in a quiet village, two elderly neighbors lived side by side. One was a widower raising several children. The other had never married and lived alone. Both worked diligently in their fields, and at the end of each harvest they gathered their grain and stored it in separate barns.

One evening, the man who lived alone sat quietly reflecting on the year’s harvest. As he looked toward his neighbor’s home, a thought came to him.

“It isn’t right that I should have as much grain as my neighbor. I have only myself to care for, while he must provide for his children. His responsibilities are greater than mine. He needs this harvest more than I do.”

That night, after darkness had settled over the village, he filled a sack with grain, carried it across the field, and quietly placed it inside his neighbor’s barn. He returned home without saying a word, grateful for the opportunity to lighten another person’s burden.

Unknown to him, the widower was having similar thoughts.

As he looked toward his neighbor’s home, he reflected,

“It isn’t right that I should have as much grain as my neighbor. Although I have children to feed today, I also have children who will one day care for me. My neighbor lives alone and has no family to depend on as he grows older. He needs this grain more than I do.”

That same night, he quietly filled a sack with grain, crossed the field beneath the moonlight, and gently placed it inside his neighbor’s barn.

When morning came, each man was surprised to discover that the amount of grain in his own barn seemed unchanged. Neither could understand why, but neither spoke of it.

Night after night, each secretly carried another sack of grain to the other’s barn. And every morning, each was puzzled to find that his supply of grain had not diminished.

Then one peaceful evening, as they crossed the field carrying their sacks, they met in the middle.

For a moment they stood in silence.

Then they smiled, set down their sacks, and embraced.

In that sacred moment, each realized that the other had been performing the very same quiet act of kindness. Neither had sought recognition. Neither expected gratitude. Each simply wanted to make life a little easier for the other.

According to an ancient tradition, the place where the two neighbors embraced was later chosen as the site for a holy temple. Whether the story is historical or symbolic, its message remains timeless: when hearts are filled with kindness, ordinary places become sacred.

Spiritual Insight

Kindness does not announce itself. It often moves quietly, asking for nothing in return. The two neighbors never sought recognition. Each simply saw another person’s need as more important than his own. That is the essence of kindness. It is love expressed through thoughtful action, even when no one is watching.
